West Texas Millionaires Close Encounter

It was on this day, June 18th, a hot Monday morning in Lubbock. The West Texas Millionaires had just finished a Saturday night performance at the Cotton Club and stayed over Sunday at The Joy Motel.

The boys were getting an early start and wanted something quick to eat, so they stopped by the August pie shop where August T. Moeller was just finishing baking the last batch of pies. He remembers them coming in, because of the fancy cowboy shirts they were wearing and the Cadillac outside. “Yea, I remember them coming in. The leader, Dan, had an apricot pie and his buddy Roger had the usual, cherry. They had their pie and coffee and left.”

They then visited the owner of U.V. Blake on 34th Street where they dropped of what would be their last 45's. He said they thanked him for carrying their record and wished him a nice day. They left Lubbock via Hwy 27 to Amarillo to then connect to Route 66. The last known location of them was when they stopped at Whiting Brothers gas station in New Mexico to get gas and phone ahead to friends in Albuquerque that they were on the way. The time was 4:30 pm.

New Mexico Highway Patrol reported finding a white Cadillac 4 door with “West Texas Millionaires” painted on the tail fins. The Highway Patrol were already responding to a call by residents seeing a “UFO”. The residents had taken this picture:

Sheriff George Wilcox also reported that these craft were seen in the distance from highways, mainly ROUTE 66. He asked “Why would a UFO let itself be seen by hovering near a major interstate? Were the occupants tracking somebody or looking for somebody?”

The Texas millionaires were nowhere to be found at the site of the abandoned vehicle. It still had there music equipment, their stage wardrobe, and acetates of their recent hit record.

So on this day, let us remember the much loved music and spirit of the West Texas Millionaires, who gave us some of the best music this side of the Mississippi. You will be remembered, you will be missed, but you will not be forgotten......
